We’re mere days away from Monday’s total solar eclipse, marking Michigan’s first visible occurrence since 1954.

The eclipse’s trajectory spans from Texas to Maine, traversing 14 states, including a small portion of Michigan.

For optimal viewing, Luna Pier in Monroe County stands out as the sole location in the state where 100% darkness may be experienced, being situated on the edge of the totality line. However, even if you’re elsewhere in Michigan outside the path of totality, with favorable weather conditions, a partial eclipse should still be visible.

For avid eclipse enthusiasts, embarking on a road trip might be worthwhile. Although Luna Pier offers just 19 seconds of totality, cities farther south along the totality path are expected to witness prolonged darkness.

Safety precautions are paramount for eclipse watchers. Those traveling for the event should depart early to avoid congestion, especially on southbound highways. It’s strongly advised to select a viewing location and remain stationary, as attempting to watch the eclipse while driving poses significant risks.

Wearing eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard is essential. Directly observing the sun during the eclipse without proper eye protection can cause severe damage, potentially leading to blindness. Only remove the glasses during maximum totality, even if clouds obscure the sky.
